Ibiza is the perfect setting to star in your own film, anything can happen on this island, from bumping into Kate Moss shopping in Dalt Vila, Massiel walking her dog, or Jade Jagger chowing down on fresh fish in a Cala Xuclar beach bar. If all these have happened to me in just three years of living on La Isla Bonita, what can’t happen in an actual film shot on the islands? Here are seven films set in Ibiza and Formentera, so you’ll be well-informed for your next getaway.

1. THE EUROPEANS – VICTOR GARCÍA-LEÓN (2020)

Two men, both single and in their thirties, travel to Ibiza in the late 1950s, attracted by the legend of sex, European tourists and freedom. But when they arrive on the island, things don’t turn out as they had planned. Raúl Arévalo and Juan Diego Botto star in this nostalgic comedy that received three nominations at the 2020 Goya Awards.

2. SEX AND LUCIA – JULIO MEDEM (2001)

Possibly the most famous sequence shot in Formentera sees a tousle-haired Paz Vega riding a bike in her red dress with the Cap de Barbaria lighthouse disappearing behind her. This cult film explores sexual freedom, desire, the sadness of falling out of love, absolute heartbreak and passion. Lucia travels to this quiet island in the Mediterranean (Formentera), where she remembers her relationship with Lorenzo, a writer she fell in love with while reading his works. You’ll travel to Formentera with a different outlook after watching this film.

3. THE DIVER INSIDE (DER TAUCHER) – GÜNTER SCHWAIGER (2019)

Austrian director Günter Schwaiger, who has lived in Spain for more than 20 years, shot this film which deals with the harsh reality of domestic violence. The beauty of Ibiza’s beaches and sunsets contrasts with the terrible situation of its protagonists. The film was presented at the latest edition of Ibicine and stars Franciska Weisz, Julia Franz Richter and Dominic Marcus Singer.

4. AMNESIA – BARBET SHROEDER (2015)

Jo is a composer from Berlin who wants to be part of the nascent electronic music revolution in Ibiza, and his dream is to become a DJ at the legendary Amnesia nightclub. He meets Martha, a mysterious woman who lives alone by the sea, marking the start of a romance with the island as a backdrop, the kind of story that only happens in Ibiza.

5. ELLAS – MARTA ALEDO (2022)

The most talked about Ibicenco film in recent years, starring and produced by Ana Vide and her co-star, Bárbara Hermosilla, and written and directed by Marta Aledo. Two pregnant friends spend the day at Cala Mastella and talk about their experiences with pregnancy and work-life balance. The idea arose when the two actresses, pregnant at the same time, were losing job opportunities as their pregnancies progressed. A much-needed reflection in the most beautiful setting possible.

6. A SUMMER IN IBIZA – ARNAUD LEMORT (2019)

This French comedy, starring Christian Clavier and Mathilde Seigner, chronicles the adventures of a ‘modern family’ in which Phillipe (Clavier) wants to win the affection of his girlfriend’s teenage children at all costs. He makes a deal with her son: if he passes his exams, he can choose the destination for their summer holiday. Of course, the son passes with flying colours and chooses Ibiza. Philippe is in for the surprise of his life… French humour in its purest form.

7. MORE – BARBET SHROEDER (1969)

This cult film was censored in several countries at the time of its release, but like all films ahead of their time, it marked a before and after, especially among films that deal with drug addiction and sex, two subjects that film producers scrupulously avoided at the time. Focusing on the lifestyle of hippy communes in the 60s and 70s, the film is impeccably photographed and shows Ibiza in a very organic, almost dreamlike way.
