Top 6 Iconic Bars in Ibiza

The island can be explored as a bar hopping tour, listening to live music, enjoying art exhibitions or tasting local delicacies in authentic places that retain the flavour and know-how of yesteryear within their walls. Here, we provide a mini guide so you can experience some of the best bars and venues on the island.

1. CAN JORDI BLUES STATION

At kilometre 8 on the Ibiza to Sant Jordi road, we find one of the island's little gems preserved just as it was more than a century ago. A roadside bar with a small family-run grocery store selling produce from Ibiza next door becomes a temple for local music on Fridays and Saturdays. It is a meeting point for islanders and now also for outsiders who have discovered Can Jordi's fantastic atmosphere, open all year round.

Jazz, blues, rock, indie... Can Jordi covers many genres and is one of those bars where you can have breakfast, lunch or a beer in the evening, with 15 different types to choose from. Inside the bar, there are some fascinating paintings and photography exhibitions.

2. CAN TIXEDÓ ART CAFÉ

Situated towards the island's interior, at kilometre 5 on the Santa Inés road, we find another place that perfectly captures the island's essence. Located in the rural nucleus of Buscastell, Can Tixedó Art Café has delicious homemade tapas, which combine typical Spanish gastronomy with nods to Moroccan and Asian cuisine. Throughout the year, they organize numerous cultural events such as jazz evenings on Thursdays during the winter, a craft market with local products on Saturdays, art exhibitions, and terrace parties with DJs during the summer evenings.

3. CAN BERRI BAR

Between Sant Josep and Sant Antoni, we find the charming village of Sant Agustí des Vedrá. Can Berri is next to a beautiful church overlooking a valley of almond trees and traditional Ibizan houses. Situated inside one of these houses, with an idyllic orange tree garden where you can sit down and eat and a menu that combines tradition with colourful touches, Can Berri is one of the island's musts. They organize art exhibitions and small live music concerts in summer and winter within their "Correbars" and "Cañas & Roll" cycles. Can Berri and its famous calçotadas (grilled long green onions with romesco sauce), its Argentinean and stone-grilled meat and its sunny afternoons of endless after-dinner conversations are part of the charm of an island that continues to cling to the spirit of community and tradition.

4. CA N' ANETTA

Ca n' Anetta is revered on the island as the epicentre of the hippie Ibiza era that boomed in the 60s, converting it into one of the island's most legendary bars. Located in the Sant Carles de Peralta municipality, you have yet to discover the authentic Ibiza if you haven't stopped by and tried its excellent farmer's salad made with the best local produce. Also known as Bar Anita, this bar is a place of pilgrimage. People from Ibiza and island guests alike drive to Sant Carles to taste its delicious herbal liqueur, made by the same family following the traditional recipe. The bar is also famous for its cosmopolitan and lively atmosphere, where people get together daily on its terrace in front of the church.

Initially called Can Pep Benet, the establishment opened its doors as a grocer's shop and small bar in 1876, making it one of the oldest ongoing businesses on the island.

5. PARADISE LOST

If you want a great cocktail in the heart of Ibiza with a cool atmosphere and good music, there's no better place than Paradise Lost. This peculiar bar takes its name from the Garden of Eden. In this place, everything is temptation for the sinful spirit of man. Signature cocktails with a unique personality and a décor emulating Paradise Lost. Its owner, Jim, a friendly and good-natured Scot, runs this marvellous cocktail bar, the island favourite for yours truly, and if you allow me to make another recommendation, don't miss the Rosita Mala cocktail.

6. SANDY'S BAR

A place that, although no longer with us, deserves a special mention for its contribution to the island's cultural network. A meeting point for the entire art scene that congregated in Ibiza in the 60s and 70s in Santa Eulalia, it was the place where you could share coffee and cigars with assorted celebrities, including Denholm Elliott, famous for his roles in the first and third Indiana Jones movies, and Trading Places among many others, Spanish actress Ángela Molina, writer Howard Sackler and Toledo-born painter Antonio Villanueva.
